The Korean peninsula is highly abundant in species diversity compared to countries of similar size due to its vast array of topographic and climatic conditions. Approximately 29,916 different kinds of species and infraspecific taxa of plants, algae, lichens, fungi and animals have been reported in Korea.

These indigenous species of Korea are the keys to establishing a balanced eco-community, where "humans and nature coexist in harmony." Also, they are precious source materials for the biotechnology(BT) industry, which has become one of the most prominent high-tech industries of this century. In these respects,
the aboriginal species should be cherished as invaluable
national assets and treasures.

The National Institute of Biological Resources
(NIBR) was founded in March 2007 as
a specialized research institution dedicated
to systematically secure endemic resources.

The primary functions of the NIBR are to survey,
research, preserve and manage Korean biological assets.
The institute will also serve as an educational center
for general public to increase social awareness
on the importance of biological resources and the need for conservation and sustainable use through exciting exhibitions and interactive learning programs.

The NIBR currently houses approximately 1.75 million collections and plans to expand its holdings to 5 million by 2030. The institute strives to become one of the most distinguished global organizations in the fields of preservation, research and exhibition of biological capitals.
