NIBR Held Expert Meeting on Research and Utilization of Biological Resources

NIBR held an expert meeting on research and utilization of biological resources in Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel to discuss best practices on effective utilization of biological resources and future plans for biological applied research.

The purpose of this meeting was to share experiences and practices from government, industry, and academia that research and utilize biological resources in Korea in compliance with the Act on Access to and Utilization of Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing, which became fully effective on 18 August 2018.

In this meeting, 6 experts from public and private R&D sectors including Dr. So-yeong Kim from National Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Jae-yeong Ko from AmorePacific Corporation elaborated on the industrial practices and research directions on biological research for utilization.

NIBR has also conducted different research on Korean indigenous species associated with Korean traditional knowledge and allied species of useful foreign species to study their potential efficacy and features along with genome analysis.

NIBR has applied for 134 patents on the research outcomes (114 patents in Korea, 16 via PCT, 4 in foreign countries), and finished 50 patent registrations in July, 2018.

NIBR will incorporate the shared information and opinions from the experts into NIBR future plans and research directions.

Dr. Gye-yeong Hwang, Director General of Biological Resources Utilization Department, NIBR said “We will reflect the expert opinions when developing our research projects so that the research outcomes can contribute to the development of domestic bio-industry”.
