Message from the President

Thank you for visiting our website. Woonsuk, Beak - President of National Institute of Biological Resources

  • Living organisms inhabiting the Korean Peninsula are the critical elements to constitute "community of life" in harmony with humanity and nature. They are becoming a new engine for growth and essential to the 21 century's bio-industry.
  • For the purpose of securing sovereign rights over the biological resources, which are the valuable assets for future generation, National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) of Korean Ministry of Environment was established in March 2007.
  • Since its establishment, NIBR has put considerable efforts into building infrastructures for Korean biological resources through researching, collecting, identifying, and managing the national biological resources. In recent years, NIBR has contributed to the application field of biological resources, by providing bio-information of those resources to Korean companies and research institutions that have conducted research for commercialization.
  • Since the Nagoya Protocol entered into force in October 2014, A new era has begun, launching the race to secure national biological resources and avoid any threats concerning their sovereign rights.
  • In this sense, NIBR will take a great role in securing our national rights to biological resources by setting a good example to preserve biodiversity and encourage its sustainable use, in close cooperation with other government agencies, academia and research community.
  • Furthermore, NIBR will help people more easily understand the importance of biodiversity and its sustainable use, in order to fully conserve and take advantage of Korean biodiversity.
  • We kindly ask for your continued supports and participation.
  • Thank you
